Cyclone Ockhi: Rainfall likely to intensify

High wave surges too have been forecast in Kochi, Kollam and Thiruvananthauram.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 'very severe cyclonic storm' Ockhi, which has brushed the Kerala coast and has left a swathe of destruction in Lakshadweep, has left the Kerala coast but is very likely to intensify on December 2. Overcast conditions with mild to heavy rainfall will continue till December 3. High wave surges too have been forecast in Kochi, Kollam and Thiruvananthauram. The storm is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across Lakshadweep Islands on December 2 and then move north/ northeastwards towards Maharashtra and Gujarat during December 3 and 4.

However, according to the latest IMD forecast heavy (7-11cm) to very heavy rainfall (12-20cm) is most likely to occur at a few places in the state till December 3. Fishermen have been advised not to venture in to the sea. Further, a bulletin put out by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad, warns of high waves in the range of 4 to 5.1 metres. The height of the wave will be highest in Kochi, at 5.4 metres. Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam coasts, too, will witness the high wave surges.
