Chennai: The Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer, Safeer Kareem and his wife, Joicy’s misdemeanours have affected their one-year-old child who is now in the prison along with her mother just two days after she celebrated her first birthday. On Wednesday, Joicy and her child were remanded in Puzhal prison.
On Sunday, the girl child had celebrated her first birthday in Hyderabad. A day later, Safeer Karim was caught communicating with high-end gadgets in the exam hall during the UPSC mains exam in Chennai.
Investigations pointed the needle towards his wife Joicy, who had aided her officer husband from Hyderbad. Joicy was arrested on Tuesday by a police team headed by Deputy Commissioner, P. Aravindan and brought to the City along with Ram Babu, one of the directors of the La Excellence civil services coaching centre in Hyderabad, of which Safeer is a founder.
Safeer is in judicial remand and imprisoned in the men’s section in Puzhal. Ram Babu, director of La Excellence in Hyderabad, has been brought to Chennai and is being questioned by investigators and is likely to be arrested.
Investigators told Deccan Chronicle that the woman preferred to take her child to jail along with her instead of leaving her under the care of relatives. While the jail manual permits infants to grow up with their mothers in jails until they turn six, it is a no-brainer that prisons do not offer the most conducive of atmospheres to bring up a child.
The couple are already copping a lot of vitriol on social media with moral vigilantes spewing venom on their facebook profiles and not sparing the child either. Some have even resorted to communal attacks.
The city police are now interrogating if there were other candidates who indulged in malpractice on Safeer’s guidance. Probe is already underway to ascertain if his sister who appeared in the Kerala Public Service Commission and Isro examinations recently, resorted to similar means, police sources said. Meanwhile on Wednesday, Safeer was suspended from service by the Director General of Police.
