Chief Justice of India T S Thakur inaugurates Kerala High Court jubilee fete
Kochi: Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur on Tuesday launched the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Kerala High Court with an earnest appeal for the delivery of speedy justice even as two ministers attending the function sought the intervention of the country’s top judges to solve the crisis that keeps media off the courts in the state. Delivering the inaugural speech, Justice Thakur pointed out that the young generation yearns for speedy justice and the courts should make attempts to meet its expectations.
PWD minister G.Sudhakaran expressed dismay at the absence of media covering the functions related to the judiciary. Mr Sudhakaran said the reasons of its absence needed to be examined. “If they haven't been able to come, then the reasons should be probed,” he said. Law minister A.K Balan said good governance is possible when judiciary, executive, legislation and the media worked together, understanding their responsibilities and take their stance accordingly. Mr Balan said there are two issues that precipitated the crisis: one of media activism and other of media not being allowed to enter the courts.
“The courts are supposed to be impartial and neutral, and so is the media, too,” he said. Earlier in the day, Justice Thakur inaugurated the new Ernakulam district court complex. Supreme court judges Justice Jasti Chalameswar, Justice Kurien Joseph, Justice Ashok Bhushan, chief justice of Kerala High Court Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar, high court judges Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice K.T. Sankaran and advocate-general C.P. Sudhakara Prasad were among those present at the two functions.
