Sumathiamma, 18 children shifted at Vellimadukunnu
KOZHIKODE: The officials of the District Child Right’s Protection unit here shifted 18 inmates residing with Sumathiamma, a 65-year-old lady at Parambil Bazar, here, to Juvenile Home at Vellimadukunnu on Saturday, citing lack of proper registration for her institution Nanma Charitable Trust. District Child Protection Officer Sheeba Mumtaz told DC that for the last two years the department had been frequently directing the institution to ensure proper registration.
“It was based on a recent complaint filed with Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR), we were forced to initiate action”, she said. As per the records there were 20 inmates in the institution but two inmates here are missing. Sumathiamma claims that they were taken back by their mother. Along with Sumathiamma there were 12 boys and 8 girls at her Nanma Charitable Trust, in which one girl got married after her graduation.
Even amid serious cardiac ailments, she made sure that her kids must not undergo any hardships and all were sent to nearby schools for proper education. “There were repeated attempts to evict us from the house by the owner for the last many years. Now it is the turn of the government”, said Sumathiamma. Many people had promised us protection and support but none came at the hour of need”, she lamented. Sumathiamma plans to approach District Collector N. Prasanth soon seeking justice.
