Stay on plastic ban in Wayanad till October 5
KOZHIKODE: The High Court, on Saturday, stayed the order of the Wayanad district administration imposing a ban on use of plastic in the district from October 2 till Wednesday. The move was a sequel to a petition filed by the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES), Wayanad district unit, seeking more time for imposing the plastic ban as they are unable to ensure alternate facilities for customers.
The court also sought an explanation from the state government and district administration over the issue. It was on August 17 that Wayanad district collector Kesavendra Kumar imposed a complete ban on use and sale of plastic carry bags, disposable plastic, thermocol plates and plastic serving glasses in the district from October 2 onwards. The order was issued days before his transfer.
Mr Kumar in his order also said that apart from causing direct toxicity, plastic is carcinogens and can cause endocrine disruption. Plastic carry bags and disposable plates also cause blockages in sewage systems, streams, rivers and also cause pollution in wildlife habitats. KVVES district unit in a press release said that the organization is ready to cooperate with the move of the district administration, but needs more time to put in place alternate arrangements.
