PhD student snubs University of Hyderabad Vice Chancellor

During the ceremony, he was seen standing in front of the VC refusing to accept the certificate.

Hyderabad: Protests over Rohith Vemula’s suicide continued at the convocation ceremony of the University of Hyderabad on Saturday.

Sunkanna Velipula, one of the dalit PhD scholars, who was suspended last year from the hostel along with Rohith Vemula, declined to receive his PhD certificate from the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Appa Rao Podile. Velipula’s certificate was then handed to him by Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Vipin Srivastava.

Sunkanna finished his PhD in Philosophy in March this year and is pursuing a post-doctoral fellowship from IIT, Mumbai. During the ceremony, he was seen standing in front of the VC refusing to accept the certificate.

After Vemula’s suicide, police had booked cases against four people —including Prof Podile and BJP Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya.
