Kerala: WhatsApp group launches rice bank'
Kannur: After successfully implementing the food freezer and the dress bank for the poor, the Annapoorna WhatsApp group has come out with the rice bank, where philanthropists can drop in rice in packets of five kilograms. The rice packets would be later distributed in Kannavam tribal colony and Kolayod. After starting the freezer in April and dress bank in June, they registered themselves as a trust, said general secretary Jofin James.
“Fr Joseph Poovatholil, vicar of St Alphonsa church has been made chairman of the trust, and we have decided to keep the rice bank in front of the church. This church is a pilgrimage centre and people from all religions visit here.We are getting more than half of the box everyday,” said Mr Jofin.
There are nearly 750 members in the WhatsApp group that acts swiftly filling the food freezers, especially during hartal days and for the needy. The dress bank also turned successful, when they collected used dress and from cloth merchants in bulk to be distributed in orphanages and hospitals. For the food bank, nearly 30 of the hotels in Kannur town are regularly donating to the freezer ever since it was opened, said Mr Jofin.
