Collector U V Jose checks on SM street renovation
KOZHIKODE: District Collector U.V. Jose inspected the progress of the SM Street renovation work on Tuesday. The street will be reopened to the public before the Onam festival. The renovation works has been split into various phases and now the works of the first phase is nearing completion. The first phase includes road widening and electrification work from the SK Pottekad statue to Railway Station junction road. All the water pipes connection and the KSEB wires have been put underground and the electric posts have been adorned with decorative streetlights. The pathway has tiles now.
“We are expecting to complete the entire work by August 25 and open it to the public. A decision has been made to construct a comfort station inside SM Street for the employees working here at various shops and also for the people coming here for various purposes. The work of the comfort station will be included in the second phase of renovation”, the Collector added.
The decision to renovate SM Street was declared following the demand over the last several years by the merchants and public and also after repeated fire mishaps. The street was crying out for basic amenities like toilets, parking and waste management, which has been now solved gradually after the commencement of the SM Street renovation.
