Ceiling plaster peels off in classroom, none hurt
Chennai: Students of class II B of St Mary's matriculation higher secondary school in Mahabalipuram had a miraculous escape on Tuesday morning when the ceiling of their classroom partially peeled off and fell down. “Luckily there was no student in the room at that time. The children were coming in and those who had already come had gone out to play," police said.
However, the dust filled classroom worried the staff who were not sure if any children were stuck in the debris. Within no time, news about the falling ceiling spread in the neighbourhood and also among parents of students of the school, located on Matha koil street in North Mahabalipuram. Parents started rushing to the school to know if their children were safe or not.
Fearing mob fury, the school closed the gates and this led to a major altercation between parents and the school management.
A police team along with the Thirukazhukundram tahsildar reached the spot. Both inspected the site and confirmed that all students were safe.
The revenue official then asked the school management to repair the ceiling immediately and declare a holiday till the work was over. School authorities declared a holiday till Monday.
