Wild bison kills disabled elder near Coonoor

This is the second man-gaur conflict in Coonoor limits within a week.

Coonoor: A physically challenged elderly person succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by a wild Indian gaur near a ration shop at Kolakambai near here on Saturday. This is the second man-gaur conflict in Coonoor limits within a week.

The Citizens' Forum of Coonoor (CFC) called for adequate precautionary steps and an early warning system to effectively tackle the stray guar menace in the Coonoor limits.

While a wild gaur that strayed into Coonoor town limits last Sunday attacked and injured a youth, on Saturday morning, another bison suddenly appeared from bushes around the ration shop at Kolakambai bazaar and began to chase people. While all near the ration shop ran for safety, Radhakrishnan (65), a physically challenged person with deformities in his legs, could not run and was attacked by the gaur.

He was grievously inj-ured and rushed to the government hospital in Coonoor, but died on Saturday evening.Mr.Raj-eshkumar James, CFC secretary said, “It appears that the overgrowth of bushes due to the recent rains helps wild gaurs to hide and try to stray into human settlements.

Foresters should form teams to study and identify sensitive areas where such chances are more and track the movement of gaurs around human settlements. They should also fashion an early warning system using cyber era technologies on hand,” Mr.James suggested.
