Kozhikode: The department of agriculture development and Farmers' welfare has sanctioned Rs 3.11 crore for the district to produce vegetables for the Onam season under the project "One Garden of Vegetable for Onam" in schools, colleges and government and non-government organisations.

As part of it, agriculture offices in the district will distribute 270,000 free vegetable seed kits to schools and farmers will supply some 370,000 vegetable kits to the public, besides 450,000 saplings developed by nurseries.

Also, more than 50,000 vegetable kits would be distributed among various NGOs and women's organisations, including Kudumbashree.

Each of the 200 schools selected for the implementation of the project will get Rs 5,000 for the purchase of manures.

Officials said the organisations or institutions coming forward for the massive production of vegetables, will be given financial assistance up to Rs 75,000 and other necessary support.
