Congress Plans Grand Celebration for Centenary of Belgaum Congress Session

Mangaluru: The Congress party in Karnataka is planning for a grand celebration of the Centenary year of the historic Belgaum Congress Session of 1924, a momentous event presided over by Mahatma Gandhi.

The Belgaum Congress Session, held in December 1924, stands as a pivotal chapter in the history of India's freedom movement. The Congress party aims to illuminate its significance and promote the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi among the people of the state.

“We would be completing 100 years this year of this great event. The teachings of Gandhiji are always relevant. His message, his fight, and sacrifice, his emphasis on truth, non-violence, and the focus on Grama Swarajya and decentralization of administration has influenced people worldwide. On the occasion of the centenary celebration of the Belgaum Congress Session, we want the youth to know more about Gandhiji and his teachings,” KPCC Vice President VR Sudarshan told reporters in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

Underlining the significance of engaging the youth with this historical milestone, Sudarshan remarked, “The youth should know about it. KPCC president DK Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah want to celebrate it in a meaningful manner. We want to hold programs on a large scale in all district headquarters. There is a discussion about it.”

While the Congress party is enthusiastic about the celebration, the finer details regarding whether the events be organized by the party or the government is yet to be finalized.

“The Belgaum Session was related to the freedom movement. In the coming days we will think about how to organize the program,” Sudarshan added.
