Rain pours cold water on Congress Padayorukkam rally finale

UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said it would be held at a later date after ascertaining Mr Gandhi's availability.

Thiruvananthapuram: Following heavy rains and cyclonic storm, the UDF has postponed Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s rally on the Shangumukham beach here on Friday, marking the culmination of the monthlong Padayorukkam roadshow led by Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala. UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said it would be held at a later date after ascertaining Mr Gandhi’s availability. “The event had to be postponed considering inclement weather and security reasons,” he told reporters here.

Earlier as the sea at Shankumugham advanced 10 meters into the shore, the building of its stage had to be stopped. Mr Chennithala earlier while speaking to media as part of the Padayorukkam said that the government was exercising ‘ordinance rule’ in the state, thereby challenging the Assembly and legislators’ rights. He pointed out that the government was passing one ordinance after another. An ordinance is usually passed under emergency situations.

“The minister claims that six more ordinances would be passed beside the four which are already passed. The ordinance to permit to illegal constructions by accepting fine is an attempt at a massive scam. Many have opposed the way ordinances are brought. The right way is to bring bills in the Assembly and passed after discussions,” he said.

Mr Chennithala alleged that the arguments that rage between the CPM and the CPI over each issue are affecting the governance. “It is a problem for the public as the government is unable to intervene in any of the issues affecting them like price hike, lapses in the distribution of ration cards, disruption of law and order, and political killings,” he said. Mr Chennithala said that he did not believe in news reports that JDU would be joining the LDF.There are no circumstances for them to leave.
