Uniform Civil Code disputes: Kanthapuram sunnis to launch own fight
Malappuram: The Sunni faction led by A.P. Abubacker Musliyar Kanthapuram is set to go solo with its own campaign against the centre’s move to enforce uniform civil code. It had drawn flak from the rivals for its absence at a meeting of Muslim bodies convened by Muslim League supremo Sayid Hyderali Shihab Thangal on Saturday. The Kerala Muslim Jamath led by Abubacker Musliyar will organise a Shariath conference in Ernakulam on Thursday calling for the protection of personal laws.
More details on the campaign against the uniform civil code and the group’s stand on the current issues will be announced by Musliyar in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, a top leader of the faction said. The Sunni faction had conducted a similar conference in Mangalore in Karnataka on Saturday which witnessed huge public participation, he said. The Sunni faction’s tepid response to the invitation to the meet chaired by the Muslim League had raised eyebrows from other Muslim organisations. Some leaders of the group have described the League’s move as an effort to reap political benefit out of a religious issue.
“The issues regarding the Shariath and Muslim personal laws should be discussed and determined by the Islamic scholars. Being a political party, the League has nothing to do with the Shariath which is purely a religious matter. Interestingly, the decisions of Saturday’s meet to boycott the questionnaire issued by the Law Commission of India regarding the revision of Muslim personal laws and to disapprove of the uniform civil code were the same as taken by Abubacker Musliyar on October 14,” another source said.
