Kerala to be garbage free in five years

CM says LDF government is committed to eco-friendly development

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said his government would soon launch a massive programme to turn Kerala into a “garbage-free” state within five years. In an article released on the eve of 60th anniversary of Kerala’s formation, the Chief Minister said that his government was committed to environment friendly development. The Chief Minster said waste disposal, toxic free vegetables were priority areas of the government.

As part of Haritha Keralam, the government plans to put in place effective waste disposal mechanism emphasising on disposal at source, across the state. Besides, major thrust would be given on organic farming. He said the government would launch a major campaign for conservation and protection of water sources including streams, ponds and lakes. "I seek the wholehearted cooperation of the people especially the youth for the success of this programme," he said.

Mr Vijayan said the LDF was functioning as per the massive mandate given by the people for a corruption free, secular and development oriented government. "We are moving towards a sustainable development model which has no parallel in the world," he said. He said one of the significant programmes of the government was to provide houses to all families which do not have houses. The scheme will also cover landless families who would be provided land.

On the mega development projects, Mr Vijayan said Kannur airport would be functional by April 2017, work on Kochi Metro was going on a full swing at the moment. "We have already taken steps for national high way development with a width of 45 meters and raising the standard of highways to international level. He said the initial work related to Kochi Water Metro project had begun.

With the commissioning of LNG pipeline, thermal based industries in the state would get a new lease of life. By 2017 March, Kerala will be declared as total electrified state. The chief minister said the LDF Government was committed to provide job opportunities to the youth. "Our government had created many jobs during the last 100 days and we are trying to ensure that appointment orders are issued within 90 days of receiving advice memo," he said.
