CBSE's diktat on financial details irks schools

CBSE has made it mandatory for affiliated schools to make their fee and infrastructure details public by uploading information on the school website.

Chennai: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in the city are apprehensive of disclosing their staff salary and balance sheet details in public as it may lead to unnecessary public scrutiny of schools.

CBSE has made it mandatory for affiliated schools to make their fee and infrastructure details public by uploading information on the school website.

In an office memorandum issued on October 25, it has asked the schools to disclose the information under six categories including the general, management, infrastructure and fee details, staff details and other vital information.

A senior principal of a reputed school in the city said, “We have already uploaded details such as student strength, fee structure on our school’s website. Now the board is asking for additional information like the teachers’ date of birth, salary and other details.”

“But most of the teachers are not willing to put the salary and date of birth details in a public domain. Otherwise, we don’t have an objection to putting out all the information,” he said, adding that the main idea for seeking these details is to find out which schools are commercially based and which schools are doing it as a service.

Another provision directs schools to upload the transfer certificates on the website. “It will put our schools in a tight spot as we may receive more recommendations for vacant seats. It also may lead to commercialization of admission,” he said.

“Many schools are apprehensive of uploading the balance sheet on the website. We can submit the balance sheet to the board and we have no issues. If we upload the salary details of the teachers then unnecessary comparisons may arise,” K. Mohana, principal, Modern Senior Secondary School, Chennai.
“In our meetings, we all felt that the cbse is asking too many details. We are waiting to know the response of other schools,” said Radhika Unni, Principal, SBOA School and Junior college, Chennai.

“We have all details as we need these details for affiliation purpose. They only want us to split up all the details in small units. But the only thing is we wanted to know why so many details are being asked?” she said. The schools have to disclose the information on or before November 30.
