Recreation of Kantara song leaves six injured in Kadapa district

ANANTAPUR: Performance on lines similar to a Kanthara movie during a Ganesh idol immersion procession led to a mishap at Yerraguntla mandal headquarters in Kadapa district late on Saturday. Six persons were injured.

Three of them suffered serious burn injuries after flames spread into the procession.

Sources said some members of a Ganesh Utsav team planned to perform like in a recent Kanthara movie, in which the hero plays with flames. This is a regular performance in areas along the Kerala and Karnataka borders.

When the team was performing the Kanthara- style feat by using petrol to get flames instead of traditional ‘divitis’, it ignited fire and this spread fast. Six persons suffered burn injuries. Three children were seriously injured.

Police rushed to the spot and put out the flames. The victims were shifted to the Proddatur government hospital. The procession continued after the police and rescue teams put out flames and cleared the line for the immersion process.
