Undavalli gets HC relief in Margadarshi case

Hyderabad: Former Lok Sabha member from Congress Undavalli Arun Kumar was given a major relief by Telangana High Court on Thursday in a case related to a defamation damages suit filed by Margadarshi Chit Funds Ltd.

In an interim order, Justice P. Sree Sudha stayed all further proceedings in a suit at lower court filed by the company against Arun Kumar.

Margadarshi Chit Funds had moved a defamation suit against him in the civil court seeking Rs 50 lakh as damages for allegedly making defamatory statements against the company in 2007.

The lower court took reports in newspapers that Arun Kumar had allegedly made such remarks against Margadarshi, into cognisance. Challenging it, Arun Kumar filed a revision petition before the High Court.

S. S Prasad, senior counsel, objected to newspaper reports being taken as evidence. He also brought to the notice of the court that the High Court had earlier directed the lower court to decide the admissibility of newspaper reports as evidence after hearing both sides.
