Trained Kudumbashree members out to check dog menace

Official says in Tripunithura municipality alone, 20-30 strays are getting sterilised.

Kochi: Kudumbashree Mission is getting involved actively in controlling stray dog menace. The women's self-help group is one of the implementing agencies for the animal birth control (ABC) programme, and women are proving their mettle in a domain which has so far been alien to them. They are now being given training in ABC implementation in local bodies. A panel of vets will assist them. In Ernakulam district alone, 35 local bodies have started the programme in right earnest involving Kudumbashree workers.

A Kudumbashree official said in Tripunithura municipality alone, 20 to 30 stray dogs are getting sterilised. She said the campaign would get more teeth after Onam. The target for Ernakulam is to sterilise at least 10,000 strays this year. Another campaign Kudumbashree is actively involved in is ‘My Farm for My Food Security’ aimed at cultivating vegetables for each family’s need.

The campaign will include Kudumbashree members with homestead farms of 25 cents and below. The members will get seeds of five types of vegetables and training. In Ernakulam alone, 10,000 groups with 40,000 members will be involved in the campaign. Kudumbashree has already opened Onam markets in different parts of the district and is targeting a turnover of '10 crore.
