Thrissur: Plastic shelters evicted family

Bank attaches Dalit's house for default.

THRISSUR: A five-member Dalit family of daily wage workers at Ambedkar Colony in Avinissery here is living under a plastic sheet on the premises of their house after the Union Bank attached it for payment defaults of Rs 1.25 lakh on their Rs 4-lakh home loan. They say a report regarding their plight was sent to state Revenue Minister R. Chandrasekharan by Thrissur collector A Kowsigan a couple of days ago. The family of construction worker Sakthivel and his wife Manjula and two kids is yet to get any assistance from the government.

Mr Sakthivel said his mother-in-law Madhavi availed the ten-year term loan in 2014 to complete the concrete house on the four-cent land in the colony as the Rs 2 lakh aid she got from the government was not sufficient. “For the medical care of my brother-in-law nearly Rs 7 lakh was spent. He was suffering from fits, and he has not fully recovered. So, till now, we could only pay Rs 1.5 lakh," he said.

"We had earlier acquired a stay from the High Court for two months, but after that the bank last week took possession of our house without any notice. They threw out all our belongings including my concreting cutting tools.” Tahsildar K. C. Chandrababu who submitted a report to the collector said the bank in Cherpu told the revenue officials that the house was attached and sealed by their collection agents and their head office gave seizure orders.
