MBBS admissions: Chaos reign supreme

Admissions go beyond schedule.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chaos continued to prevail in the spot admissions to the MBBS courses on Thursday, the final day. The admissions which went on past midnight on Wednesday, were behind schedule on Thursday also. Only students up to rank 7000 were called for reporting by noon. The long waiting continued in the evening also. Though spot admissions were being conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, in reality they were being controlled by the managements. Though the students were legally bound to pay only the fee of Rs 5 lakh and a bank guarantee, the colleges were insisting on hostel and other fees at the venue.

Some colleges even asked the students to pay Rs 4 lakh as hostel fees. Though the government has assured of action over complaints, the managements did not bother, said sources. As per the Supreme Court orders, 15 days' time is granted to submit the bank guarantee. However, candidates who do not submit the guarantee at the time of admission are required to submit a bond for up to Rs. 6 lakh. The managements were even trying to mislead students by not giving the correct information.

Nine self- financing medical colleges have agreed to give up bank guarantees. They are Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur, Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, Thrissur, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery, Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Science, Thiruvalla, Karuna Medical College, Vilayodi, Palakkad, Kannur Medical College, Anjarakandy, Mamba, Kannur, Al Azhar Medical College and Superspecialty Hospital, Ezhalloor, Mount Zion Medical College, Chayalode, Adoor, and Gokulam Medical College, Venjarammoodu. Mout Zion said that only 50 percent of the students will be admitted without bank guarantee.
