Frame laws to rein in self financing colleges: Kanam Rajendran

Specific and stringent control should be ensured over admission, fee and examination system in self financing colleges.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran on Thursday said a special session of Assembly Session needs to be convened to frame a comprehensive law for reigning in self financing colleges which are functioning purely with profit motive. In a statement here the CPI leader said that to begin with the government should convene an all party meeting to evolve a consensus on the issue ahead of Special Session. Specific and stringent control should be ensured over admission, fee and examination system in self financing colleges.

"It is the responsibility of the government to clear the dark shadows hovering over the state because of mushrooming of self financing colleges. Education sector going into the hands of traders will spell disaster for the state," he said. Mr Rajendran said there was a need for lasting solution to bring an end to the situation where students have to return with tears without getting admission because of financial problems. It is just not enough to examine only the admission process.

The standard of education and infrastructure facilities in these institutions also required to be examined for detecting the flaws and initiate steps to remove such problems. The CPI leader said the recent issues related to admissions to self financing colleges have pointed to the inevitability of bring a comprehensive law to deal with such problems. He sought top priority for the government on this matter.
