Congress bid to avoid polls to party posts

A section of leaders feels the new formula might not work.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hectic parleys are on in New Delhi with senior Congress leader A. K. Antony and other lawmakers as the Sept 25 deadline for organisational revamp nears. Congress MPs have concluded that it was ideal to have a consensus rather than elections. On Thursday, senior MP Prof K. V. Thomas held talks with Mr Antony. All Kerala MPs are keen on ensuring adequate representation for Youth Congress, Dalit, newcomers and women leaders right from booth committees. But they fear KPCC leadership playing spoilsport.

A section of leaders feels the new formula might not work. “A block delegate can only become a KPCC member. Similarly, mandalam delegates get into the DCC, which would work against youth leaders and newcomers,” said one. A majority of them vouch for certain norms like quotas for these sections to prevent allegations. A prominent leader from Kollam pointed out that during the 2016 Assembly elections, Savin Sathyan, former state secretary of the Youth Congress, was fielded against CPM’s Aisha Potty in Kottarakara and he lost by more than 42, 000 votes. “Fortunately, there are DCC presidents like M. Liju (Alappuzha) who are ensuring norms right from the lower strata,” he said.
