Over 400 B.Ed seats remain vacant
Chennai: At the end of the first phase of B.Ed. counselling on Tuesday more than 400 seats in government aided colleges of education remained vacant.
Counselling for BEd admissions in government and government aided colleges of education began on August 22.
This year 1,777 seats were available for counselling in seven government colleges and 14 government-aided colleges. After the counselling, 1,314 seats were filled. For the remaining vacant seats, second phase counselling will be held on September 15 and 16, said M.S. Thillai Nayaki, secretary, Tamil Nadu B.Ed. Admissions and principal, Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study of Education.
“All government college seats were filled. Only the seats in government-aided colleges are still vacant. We hope to fill these seats in the next phase of counselling,” she said.
The fees will be higher in the government aided colleges compared with government colleges. So, many students avoided joining the government aided colleges this year.
Totally 2,727 candidates were called for the counselling of 3,736 applicants. To fill the vacant seats the counselling committee will call the remaining students. B.Ed. classes will begin on September 7. But students have asked to join before September 2. Tamil Nadu government had reserved 20 per cent B.Ed. seats for B.E., B.Tech. graduates from this year. Of 150 BE graduates who applied for the B.Ed. course only 69 have selected the seats in the counselling.
