Andhra Pradesh: Kapu panel deadline not met

Even though the deadline ended, a lot of work is still pending.

Vijayawada: Though the government announced that the Justice Manjunatha Commission report on the socio economic status of Kapus will come by August, now it seems a distant reality.

Even though the deadline ended, a lot of work is still pending. The commission is visiting districts from September 19, starting with Chittoor, to take opinions of the people on the backwardness of the Kapu community.

As the government has promised to meet Kapu community leaders, they are planning to meet on September 11 at Rajamundry to decide the future course of action.

Mr Mudraga Padmanabam, who spear heads the Kapu agitation told Deccan Chronicle that, despite the Manjunatha commission’s district visits they will continue the agitation. He said the field visits of the commission should have been done much earlier. We will attend the commission’s meeting and present our views and we will continue our struggle till we get what we were promised, he added.

Opposition parties also criticised the government for the delay in Manjunatha Commission report. Mr. Botcha Satyanarayana of the YSRC alleged that the government somehow is trying to bury the Kapu reservation issue. He said if the government was really concerned about the issue, they would have provided the necessary infrastructure to the Manjunatha commission. He said it is a failure of the government and not that of the commission. If things goes like this, Manjunatha commission will remain an eyewash, he said.

Senior BJP leader Kanna Laxmi Narayana also found fault with the government. He said it is the responsibility of the government to fulfil its promises.

Some senior Kapu politicians are of the view that Pawan Kalyan was brought to the fore to nullify the Kapu issue and to cover up the government’s failure to meet the August deadline. They allege that the government is looking for ways to bury the Kapu reservation issue for good.

Meanwhile Mr Bonda Uma Maheswar Rao of the TD said it will take another 3 months for the Manjunatha commission to complete proceedings. He said the ongoing pulse is crucial in giving the report according to SC guidelines. As the survey has reached the half way mark, it will take another 45 days to complete.

Meanwhile, the Justice Manjunatha commission will visit districts and gather ground level data, he added. According to Mr Uma by March 2017 the issue of Kapu reservations will be resolved. completely and hoped that Kapu?s will get BC status.
