Wholesome food soon for students of all govt hostels
KALABURAGI: The state government has launched a pilot project to provide wholesome food to students of government hostels based on their weight. An order in this regard has been issued, according to Minister for Social Welfare Priyank Kharge.
During an interaction with the media here, Mr Kharge said that a decision in this regard had been taken at a meeting of teachers and hostel supervisors.
He said that the hostels were now being provided food based on the number of students and allotment of funds. The pilot scheme had been launched in two hostels in Bengaluru city and Bengaluru rural district. "Based on the effectiveness of the scheme, it will be extended to other places," he added.
The minister said that a biometric attendance system would be introduced in hostels. Food items would be supplied to them based on the attendance of students. A plan had been prepared to build hostels by the Social Welfare Department in association with the Karnataka Residential Education Institutions Society (KREiS).
“Tenders will be invited soon for construction of model hostels. Importance will be given for providing better amenities to students,” he added.
There were 2,500 hostels under the Social Welfare Department. The Karnataka Public Service Commission had been directed to fill vacancies of group A, B and C posts in the department. Recruitment of wardens and supervisors would also be done, he said.
To a query, he said steps would be taken for the comprehensive development of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
