D Litt degree to Kalamandalam Gopi, Prof M K Sanu, Prof N V P Unithiri
Thiruvananthapuram: The academic council of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit will confer D.Litt degrees on Kalamandalam Gopi, Prof M.K. Sanu and Prof N.V.P Unithiri. The decision was on the recommendation of the University's Syndicate followed by the academic council meeting's affirmation. The university is honouring Mr Gopi for his contributions to performing arts, Prof Sanu to literature and Prof Unithiri to the Sanskrit language.
Mr Gopi is a distinguished Kathakali artist noted for his exceptional expertise in the romantic and dramatic portrayal of the Pachcha roles. India honoured him with the civilian award of Padma Shri in 2009. A prominent critic who has authored 36 books, Prof Sanu is a social activist and a recipient of Padmaprabha Literary Award. Prof Unithiri is renowned Sanskrit scholar with several books and translation works to his credit. He was the former head of Sanskrit department, Calicut University, and the former principal-dean of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit.
