Over 50,000 students get RTE admission
Chennai: From all over Tamil Nadu over 50,000 students got admitted to private schools through Right to Education (RTE) Act on Wednesday. “We are gathering district wise admission details. We will be able to get the total number of students admitted under this quota only tomorrow,” officials said.
Of 9,000 private schools in the state over 3,000 schools admitted students through lots as they received more applications than the available seats. In these schools, the lots were conducted in front of parents, education officials and revenue officials.
Apart from one or two incidents, the admissions have gone through peacefully. Some parents were denied entry at DAV Matriculation school in Choolaimedu as there was a large crowd gathered in front of the school. The parents were agitated. “After seeing that their wards names also featured in the selection list, the parents left the place,” an official said.
As per the Act, at least 25 % of the seats at entry level classes (LKG and class 1) in private schools need to be reserved for children who are hailing from economically and socially disadvantaged sections.
This year 79,842 students have applied online for the 25% seats available under this quota in over 9,000 schools. Among the three sections, the economically weaker section had received 61,189 applications.
The priority category in the disadvantaged group received 578 applications. Under disadvantaged group section, 18,075 applications were received. Madurai district received 6,520 applications. Chennai was second with 4,870 applications.
The department of school education has formulated guidelines for the admissions. Orphans and kids of scavengers were given priority in the admissions. Those who reside within a one km radius alone included in the first round of lots. The students selected under this quota will get admission before June 5.
