Muslim Youth League opposes Athirappilly project
Thrissur: The Kerala State Muslim Youth League has come out strongly against the stage government move to set up the Athirappilly hydel power project. Its leaders told DC that they would join hands with the tribals and environmentalists if the CPM-led government decides to go ahead with the project regardless of its environmental impact.
“Earlier, during the time of the V.S. Achuthanandan-led LDF government, IUML leaders like M.K. Munner along with the youth league leaders had protested in Athirappilly when there was a similar move to push the project,” Mr P.M. Sadiqali, president, Kerala State Muslim Youth League, said.
Due to the objections within the LDF and from others, Power Minister Kadakampally Surendran had relaxed his stand going by his statement on Tuesday that a consensus would be evolved on the project.
A press release by the Youth League here said that vested interests and corruption were behind the move of the new government to go ahead with the project within a few days of assuming office. “The CPM has the responsibility to tell the people what common interest the project serves” Mr Sadiqali said.
