Kerala High Court raps collector on Container Road mishaps

Court asked why a meeting of the stakeholders was not convened by the Collector

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Tuesday criticised the district administration for the delay in convening a meeting to take steps to end accidents on the Container Road. A division bench comprising Justice K.T. Sankaran and Justice K. Harilal had asked the district collector to discuss the problem of frequent accidents in a meeting of the stake holders such as Goshree Island Development Authority, Cochin Port Trust, secretaries of Kalamassery and Eloor municipalities, secretary of Cherannellor panchayat and the City Police Commissioner.

When the case came up for hearing, the state informed the Court that the district collector would convene a meeting in a week and suggest remedial measures as directed by the court earlier. Government pleader Girija Gopal submitted that the collector would file a report by June 13.

The court initiated suo motu case on the basis of a letter wrote by Justice P.N. Ravindran, a sitting Judge, after he came across two tragic accidents recently. The judge in his letter pointed out “the vehicles parking on the container road did not comply with the provisons. Though the district collector had prohibited parking along the Container Road, such ban was being defied by the drivers of huge containers trucks.”
