Chennai government schools directed not to issue books
CHENNAI: After making all efforts to distribute free books to government school students on the opening day, school education department officials took a ‘U’ turn and directed headmasters not to distribute the books on Wednesday.
Government schools are reopening on Wednesday after the summer vacations.
Department officials worked hard for the last few weeks to distribute free books, uniforms and notebooks to the children on the first day.
“Schools were instructed not to distribute the books to students. We don’t know why,” said Sami. Sathiamoorthy, president, Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary Schools’ Headmasters Association. “We are stocking the books from May 20 to give to students on the first day. Without book distribution, learning and teaching works will get affected,” he said.
More than fifty lakh students from government schools will get the free books.
On enquiry, school education department sources said that the books will be distributed after a formal inauguration function in Chennai.
Many private schools are scheduled to open only on June 6. Private school authorities said they had declared the reopening date well before the summer vacation.
