Salem: A terrible case of alleged ‘dowry torture’ has led a 26-year-old woman to commit suicide at her husband’s place in Tathagapatti near Salem, but the victim’s kin refused to accept her body saying it was a case of ‘murder’ on the part of the bridegroom’s family.
Police said on Tuesday that a 26-year-old young Muslim woman, Hazeefa had married Hamim Ali, 28, of Tathagapatti three years ago. However, unfortunately, the husband had been allegedly torturing his wife to get more dowry from her mother’s place in the form of cash and land.
During another bout of such torture on Monday, a much vexed Hazeefa allegedly committed suicide by hanging at her husband’s house. On information, Annathanapatti police rushed to the spot, retrieved the woman’s body and sent it to Mohan Kumaramangalam government hospital in Salem for post-mortem.
Hearing of their daughter’s death, the girl’s parents refused to accept Hazeefa’s body after the autopsy, demanding that police arrest Hamim Ali and his family members who were responsible for their poor daughter’s death. Police, persuaded the protesters to disperse, assuring them of needed legal action.
