Poet Bharathidasan’s contributions recalled

Mr. S.S.Palanimanickam, former union minister, Namasivayam, advocate, Thanjavur, and others participated in the function.

Thanjavur: Rich tributes were paid to the ‘revolutionary’ Tamil poet Bharathidasan at his birth anniversary function held here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, an erudite scholar in Tamil and English, Pazhani Arangasamy, former professor of Tamil University, brought out the essence and beauty of the great Tamil poet’s work.

In using metaphors, style and selecting simple words, Bharathidasan excelled all poets. His poems on women’s emancipation emphasised remarriage of widows. His hate towards casteism came out like fire in his poems, he said.

A congressman in the beginning, Bharathidasan changed to Dravidian principles and wrote in praise of Tamil language and Tamil Nadu, Arangasamy said. He quoted “Neealavaan aadaikul udal maraithu, nilavendru kattukindrai olimuhathai” one of the finest poems written by the poet about the moon, “Thalai Vaari Poochuti Unnai, Padasalaikku povendru sonnal un annai” which motivates young children to go to school and the poet’s song which explained in simple terms communism, capitalism, fascism and Nazism”.
