THIRUVANANTHAPURAM; The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is launching online payment facility for vehicle tax. At present, the online payment facility is available only for new vehicles at the time of registration, whereas the new facility will enable tax payment for all types of vehicles. According to MVD sources, the software for tax collection of all categories of vehicles was under the trial stage. “We hope to formally launch the facility during May after conducting training for staff on the new software,” said and MVD official.
The new facility will be useful mainly for owners of public service vehicles. The tax for private vehicles are initially paid for 15 years and thereafter for every five years. But in the case of some categories of public service vehicles the road tax are collected even on quarterly basis. Hence the online payment facility would help them pay taxes with out visiting regional transport offices and standing in queues. To begin with, only online banking based payment option would be available. Bank cards based payment system will be introduced in the due course. Online payment system for new vehicles was introduced several years back.
