Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided to implement punching system in medical colleges as per the MCI direction within two months. The system besides tracking the attendance of faculty in medical colleges would also end the practice of ghost medical faculty and absenteeism.

Electronic device or sensors attached to the finger punching attendance machine will capture digital reflection of fingerprint prototype through a live scan. Finger punching attendance machine has various fingerprint sensors. Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) the premier organisation of doctors has backed the punching decision. However, the organisation want the authorities to put the system in place without any glitches.

The decision comes close on the heels of KGMCTA strongly protesting against the transfer of 20 teachers and eight senior residents from Thrissur and Kozhikode medical colleges respectively to Manjeri Medical College. Following KGMCTA protest, the authorities have decided to cancel the transfer of doctors. Its state president Dr Kavitha Ravi said the government had agreed to cancel the transfer of doctors belonging to some of the departments including ENT and Ortho which are already facing shortage of staff. Moreover the doctors who had earlier presented themselves during the MCI inspection in their respective institutions are also being excluded.
