Chennai: Lorry caught dumping medical waste seized
Coimbatore: Public seized a lorry dumping medical waste brought from a private hospital at Rakkipalayam on Coimbatore outskirts.
Residents of Rakkipalayam near Periyanaickenpalayam were frequently sensing foul smell along with smoke coming out of an abundant well, left without water near Vinayagar Nagar.
On Monday around 3pm, residents saw a huge smoke with foul smell spreading throughout the entire area causing respiratory problem.
Suspecting something, the villagers went to the well and were shocked to see a lorry dumping medical waste inside the well and burning it.
The villagers seized the lorry along with four men belong to the same area. They were handed over to the Periyanaickenpalayam police.
According to the police, the medical waste was brought from a private hospital near Neelambur in outskirts of Coimbatore. Contractor Mohan, 36, lorry owner Chinan, 34, Chandran 27, Murugesh 26 were arrested and further enquiries are on.
In a similar case, residents of Madhukarai seized 25 lorries along with 23 drivers in October while making an attempt to dump Kerala medical waste inside Tamil Nadu. The contractor along with lorry drivers have been imprisoned, said the police officer.
