Anantapur: In view of huge expenses being incurred on use of hired diesel and petrol vehicles, Anantapur Municipal Corporation made an experiment by introducing electric motor cars for their officials of various levels who normally ply more within corporation limits.

The corporation authorities had purchased five electric motor cars and allotted it to the officials instead of driving on hired vehicles.

Diesel vehicles had a burden to pay nearly '30,000 towards rent and other expenses and have been also causing pollution at various levels.

Anantapur municipal commissioner P.V.V.S. Murthy’s idea to have 5 vehicles at first phase was successful. The AMC was hiring at least 14 cars by paying from '24,000 to '35,000 as rent on each car. Further, many vehicles were also violating the norms of RTA rules by using white board vehicles instead of yellow board cars.

“We thought to introduce electric cars experimentally in the corporation and purchased five cars. The corporation will pay '20,000 of EMI on each car for a period of six years which will be no additional burden on the corporation,” Murthy observed and further added that each car, with a mileage of 180 km on charging, would not be a risk for officials who rarely take a journey for long drive.
