Kerala Law Academy agitation: SFI calls off strike; others to resume
Thiruvananthapuram: Students Federation of India (SFI), which spear-headed the agitation in the Law Academy law college in Thiruvanathapuram, has called off its strike on Tuesday after the management assured its representatives that P. Lakshmi Nair would be removed as principal and would not be allowed to serve as a faculty for the next five years. SFI state secretary M. Vijin told media persons on Tuesday that his organization has had got a written assurance from the management conceding their demands, following which it decided to call off the strike.
Law Academy director N. Narayanan Nair who confirmed that the management had accepted the demand of the students to remove Ms Nair as principal said she would not move court against the decision. The management has announced that the classes would be resumed on Wednesday. However, the other students unions such as KSU, MSF, ABVP and AISF said that they would continue with the agitation as they would accept nothing less than the resignation of the principal. They also alleged that they were not called for the talks. Girl students of the hostel who had no affiliation with students organisations have also decided to go ahead with the strike.
Former BJP state president V. Muraleedharan, who is on an indefinite fast in front of the college, would also continue his agitation. While KSU has called for an education bandh on Thursday, ABVP said it will observe Wednesday as ‘betrayal day’ and called for an education bandh on Thursday. Meanwhile, a section of students submitted a complaint to the Income Tax department alleging that the Law Academy has deposited black money in two accounts of the Peroorkada service cooperative bank after demonitisation. One account was for Rs 1.5 crore and another for '73 lakh. Dr Mr Narayanan Nair, however, said that the money was collected as donation from students for the golden jubilee fund.
