HMT junction turns traffic nightmare

The council suggests one-acre government land between the NAD Road and HMT Road for its development.

KOCHI: The busy HMT junction, the fourth most dangerous junctions in the district as per NATPAC findings, lacks proper traffic management system, signals or parking facilities. Residents had recently formed an action council and submitted a memorandum to the district collector seeking immediate measures but to no avail. The area has more than ten educational institutions, and HMT Road is the primary link connecting NH and Seaport-Airport Road.

“Despite being the busiest junction along the NH and Seaport-Airport Road, the area has no basic facilities. Thousands of commuters including school children, employees of government and private offices and patients going to Ernakulam Medical College pass through the congested and ill maintained junction every day. Immediate steps have to be taken to construct a parking area, toilets, auto-taxi stands and rehabilitation of wayside vendors,” said M. Nandakumar, chairman of HMT Junction Development Action Council. The council suggests one-acre government land between the NAD Road and HMT Road for its development. “The recent development of Kangarapady junction based on a scientific plan is efficient and useful. The model can be followed for the HMT area as well," he said.
