High Court Of Orissa Judges Cycle To Court Amid Fuel Crisis, Send Message On Conservation

Cuttack: In a striking gesture aimed at promoting fuel conservation during Odisha’s ongoing fuel shortage, three judges of the Orissa High Court rode bicycles to court on Monday, drawing widespread attention and appreciation.
Justice Savitri Ratho, Justice V. Narasingh, and Justice Sibo Sankar Mishra cycled from the vicinity of the Judicial Academy to the High Court premises in Cuttack, underlining the importance of responsible fuel consumption at a time when the state is facing disruptions in petrol and diesel supply.
By choosing bicycles over official vehicles, the judges apparently tried to deliver a powerful symbolic message encouraging citizens to avoid unnecessary fuel usage and adopt sustainable practices wherever possible. The initiative quickly became a talking point among lawyers, court staff, and residents, many of whom praised the judges for leading by example rather than merely issuing appeals.
The bicycle ride also brought renewed focus on eco-friendly and sustainable modes of transport. Observers noted that such gestures by constitutional authorities can significantly influence public behaviour and strengthen awareness about energy conservation and environmental responsibility.
Though the judges did not make any formal statement regarding the ride, their action resonated strongly on social media platforms, where users described the move as timely, thoughtful, and inspiring amid the prevailing fuel challenges in Odisha.
The development comes at a time when concerns over fuel availability have begun altering consumer behaviour across the state. Significantly, electric vehicle showrooms in several cities are witnessing a noticeable rise in enquiries, footfalls, and bookings, as more people explore battery-powered mobility solutions as an alternative to conventional fuel-driven transport.
“As Odisha continues to navigate the fuel crisis, the judges’ bicycle ride has emerged as a simple yet impactful reminder of civic responsibility, sustainable living, and the role public figures can play in shaping collective awareness during challenging times,” said Jitendra Biswal, a social activist.
