Heavy Rains Cause Major Cracks, Shut Dehradun-Mussoorie Road

The Dehradun-Mussoorie road, one of Uttarakhand's busiest hill routes, was closed to vehicular traffic on Tuesday after major cracks appeared on a stretch near Paniwala Band following incessant monsoon rains.
The road developed visible fissures after continuous downpours weakened the hillside, prompting the district administration and the Public Works Department (PWD) to immediately suspend traffic as a precaution against further subsidence or landslides.
Officials said engineers are assessing the extent of the damage and repair work will begin as soon as weather conditions permit. The road will remain closed until it is declared safe for public use.
The closure disrupted travel for hundreds of tourists and daily commuters heading to Mussoorie, a popular hill station that witnesses heavy tourist footfall during the monsoon season. Authorities advised travellers to postpone non-essential journeys and follow official traffic advisories.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across several parts of Uttarakhand, raising concerns over additional landslides, falling rocks and road damage in the hilly districts.
District authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain alert, avoid vulnerable stretches and cooperate with emergency personnel deployed in the affected areas. Restoration teams are monitoring the situation round the clock, while efforts are underway to ensure the safety of stranded commuters and restore connectivity at the earliest.
The Dehradun-Mussoorie road has witnessed weather-related disruptions in previous monsoon seasons, with heavy rainfall frequently triggering landslides and slope failures along the route. Authorities said they will review the stability of the affected section before allowing traffic to resume.
