Heavy Police Deployment at Swargate After Bus Stand Rape in Pune

Pune Police launch a manhunt for the accused; Rs 1 lakh reward announced for information

A heavy police presence has been deployed at the Swargate bus stand following the shocking rape of a 26-year-old woman inside a stationary Shivshahi bus on Tuesday morning. The accused, Dattatraya Ramdas Gade (36), a history-sheeter out on bail since 2019, remains on the run, prompting Pune Police to launch an extensive manhunt with 13 teams working to track him down.

Incident Raises Safety Concerns

The incident, occurring just meters away from the Swargate Police Station, has sparked renewed fears over women's safety in Pune. The survivor, a hospital counselor from Aundh-Baner, was waiting for a bus to Phaltan at around 6 a.m. when Gade allegedly lured her into an empty bus, locked the doors, and assaulted her before fleeing. Initially hesitant to report the crime, the woman later confided in a friend and filed a police complaint.

Authorities have identified the accused through CCTV footage and have launched an aggressive search operation. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information leading to Gade’s arrest, urging the public to share details anonymously via dedicated helpline numbers.

Criminal History of the Accused

Gade has a history of serious offenses, including theft, robbery, and chain-snatching cases registered in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts. He was released on bail in 2019 but continued engaging in criminal activities. His latest crime has intensified calls for stricter monitoring of repeat offenders.

Political Outrage and Public Response

The brutal attack has led to political uproar, with opposition parties criticizing the BJP-led Maharashtra government over the deteriorating state of women’s safety. The incident comes at a time when Pune is preparing for Women’s Day celebrations, further highlighting the urgent need for stronger security measures.

Increased Security Measures

In response to public outrage, Pune Police have significantly increased security at Swargate bus stand and other key transit points. Surveillance has been ramped up, with additional personnel stationed to ensure commuter safety, particularly for women traveling alone in the early hours.

The survivor is currently receiving medical care at Sassoon General Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, authorities continue their pursuit of Gade, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
