Harmony Foundation Backs Indian Defence Minister Singh's Appeal to IMF to Reconsider $1 Billion Aid To Pakistan

Dr Abraham Mathai, former Vice-Chairman of Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, condemned the IMF’s funding to Pakistan, accusing it of aiding a state with a record of sponsoring terrorism.

Pune: Dr Abraham Mathai, former Vice-Chairman of Maharashtra State Minorities Commission, has endorsed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's appeal to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reconsider its $1 billion funding to Pakistan.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former Pentagon advisor, had strongly criticized the Trump administration for supporting a $1 billion IMF bailout to Pakistan, despite the country being widely accused of sponsoring terrorism.
Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on May 16 said that the IMF should reconsider its $1 billion loan to Pakistan, alleging it was "funding terror".
Dr Mathai, condemning the IMF’s decision to disburse $1 billion to Pakistan, a country with a documented history of harbouring Islamic terrorism, is nothing short of a moral outrage and a direct affront to global peace.
He noted that this infusion of capital follows the horrific Pahalgam massacre in Kashmir, in which over 26 innocent civilians were gunned down by terrorists linked to Pakistan-based groups.
Dr Mathai, in a statement, said that the IMF was originally established to rebuild the international monetary system after World War II and has since evolved into a central actor in managing balance-of-payments crises. Yet, at a time when tensions between two nuclear armed neighbouring countries remain high—despite a recent ceasefire—the decision to bail out Pakistan with $1 billion is shockingly outrageous.
“By extending financial aid to a state that actively shelters and sponsors terror, the IMF has stained its credibility and betrayed the trust of several nations striving for peace,” Dr Mathai pointed out.

“Pakistan’s role as a safe haven for terrorism is not speculative—it is a grim reality etched in blood,” he said, adding that Osama bin Laden—the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 American lives—was found living securely in Abbottabad, mere miles from the Pakistan Military Academy, a heavily guarded cantonment area.

“This was no accident but a deliberate act of complicity by a state that has consistently provided refuge to the world’s most wanted terrorists,” Dr Mathai argued, adding that the Pahalgam killings are the latest chapter in Pakistan’s shameful legacy of exporting terror.

He further added that the IMF’s funding of Pakistan was an insult to the memory of every victim of terrorism, especially the Americans, who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

“Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the IMF’s decision is a slap in the face to grieving families and to every citizen who believes in justice. By providing a financial lifeline to a rogue regime that enables terrorism, the IMF is indirectly propping up Pakistan’s Islamic terror infrastructure,” Dr Mathai asserted.

“Is the U.S. administration, through IMF aid, intentionally breeding the dragon that may one day turn on its patron?” Dr Mathai asked.

He reiterated that Pakistan is a rogue state bent on perpetrating attacks against India. “Should we conclude that the IMF is deliberately jeopardizing international peace and security by sending financial aid to a known terrorist sponsor? What safeguards has the IMF put in place to ensure these funds won’t finance terrorism against India?”.

Dr Mathai called on the global community to denounce this reckless decision and demand an immediate review of the IMF’s funding. Continuing to bankroll a state that mocks American sacrifices and undermines its neighbour’s security is truly despicable.

Dr Mathai warned that the world cannot afford to ignore a nation thriving on Islamic terrorism while cloaking itself in victimhood. He urged all countries to isolate Pakistan diplomatically and economically until it dismantles its terror infrastructure and demonstrates, through concrete actions, its commitment to peace.

Dr Mathai said that the IMF’s decision was a blot on the world’s conscience: “It is time to cease subsidizing terror and to build a future where peace and justice prevail. Pakistan must be held to account, and the IMF must answer for its complicity in this grave injustice.”
