Gandak, Kosi River Waters Rise At Normal Rate, Admin Monitoring Situation
To regulate the river flow, all 36 gates of the Valmikinagar Barrage and 20 gates of the Kosi Barrage have been opened.
Patna: Following severe flooding in Nepal and heavy rainfall in catchment areas, water levels in the Gandak and Kosi rivers have risen in Bihar.To regulate the river flow, all 36 gates of the Valmikinagar Barrage and 20 gates of the Kosi Barrage have been opened. Officials said water levels and discharge of both rivers have declined over the past 24 hours.
Amid misleading reports circulating on social media, the Supaul district administration clarified that the water level of the Kosi River is rising at a normal rate and the Kosi Barrage is completely safe. The situation is being continuously monitored. In view of a possible further rise in water levels, administrations of West Champaran, East Champaran, Saran and Gopalganj districts have been put on alert.
As per reports, the devastating floods in Nepal that swept through the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli corridor were triggered by a massive ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas, not by conventional rainfall, according to a preliminary report by Nepalese scientists.The report, commissioned by the Nepal Environment Society (NES), was released on Sunday.
The study found that a huge mass of ice, rock and debris fell from around 5,200 metres in the Langtang–Lirung area of Rasuwa and entered the Lhende River. The surge then travelled downstream through the Bhotekoshi and into the Trishuli, generating a powerful debris-laden flood, My Republica reported. The disaster devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal on August 26.
Meanwhile, the death toll from flash floods in Nepal rose to 903, authorities said on Monday, with bodies continuing to be recovered.
