Forum Seeks Murder Case Against Dipke Over Protester’s Death

Dipke responded to the case by saying the CJP would continue its campaign.

New Delhi:The Shivaji Park Citizens Forum has sought registration of a murder case against Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke following the death of a 75-year-old man who suffered a heart attack while attending the CJP’s protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on October 2.

The forum has filed a complaint with the police seeking action against Dipke in connection with the death. Police, however, have so far registered a separate case against organisers of the protest and 400-500 unidentified participants for allegedly holding the demonstration despite denial of permission.

The deceased, identified as Gopalakrishna Subbaiya Pillai, 75, a resident of Thane, had reached Shivaji Park around 4.30 pm to attend the protest. Around 5 pm, while approaching Gate No. 6, he complained of uneasiness and chest pain.

A doctor at the venue provided preliminary treatment before Pillai was taken to Sushrusha Hospital. His condition later deteriorated and he was declared dead. Police said doctors attributed the death to a heart attack and an accidental death report was registered.

The separate FIR over the protest was registered at Shivaji Park police station under Sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to unlawful assembly and disobedience of an order promulgated by a public servant, along with provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act. Police had denied permission for the October 2 gathering, citing restrictions on assemblies at Shivaji Park as well as concerns over traffic, public inconvenience and noise. Thousands nevertheless turned up for the protest, which sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

An earlier complaint had named Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh for allegedly proceeding with the demonstration despite denial of permission. Dipke responded to the case by saying the CJP would continue its campaign.
