Foreign Tourist Arrivals in Ladakh Nearly Double as UT Records Strong Tourism Growth in June

SRINAGAR: Ladakh continues to witness an unprecedented surge in tourism, with the scenic Himalayan region emerging as one of the most sought-after travel destinations in India and gaining increasing recognition across international markets.

Reflecting this sustained momentum, foreign tourist arrivals to Ladakh almost doubled in June compared to the corresponding period last year, underscoring the growing global appeal of the high-altitude destination renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, spiritual traditions, adventure opportunities and commitment to sustainable tourism.

According to official figures released by the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh on Wednesday, a total of 6,680 foreign tourists visited Ladakh during June, as compared to 3,349 foreign visitors in June last year. This represents an impressive 99.46 per cent increase, highlighting the increasing preference of international travellers for Ladakh’s unique blend of adventure, nature, culture and responsible tourism experiences.

The data further indicates that Israel remains the leading source market for foreign visitors to Ladakh, reaffirming the region’s long-standing popularity among Israeli travellers. Other major international source markets include Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Italy, South Korea and Spain, among several other European and Southeast Asian countries. The diversity of international arrivals reflects Ladakh’s expanding footprint on the global tourism map and its growing reputation as a premier destination for high-altitude adventure, eco-tourism, cultural exploration and spiritual retreats, officials said.

They added that tourism growth was not limited to the international segment alone. Overall tourist arrivals in Ladakh during June reached 1,07,740, registering a substantial 43.48 per cent increase over the 75,089 tourists recorded during the same month in the previous year. "The significant rise in footfall demonstrates the strengthening confidence of both domestic and international travellers in Ladakh as a safe, accessible and attractive year-round destination", they asserted.

The cumulative tourism figures for the first half of 2026 present an equally encouraging picture. Between January and June 2026, Ladakh welcomed a total of 2,25,286 tourists, including 2,11,645 domestic visitors and 13,641 foreign tourists. These figures underline the growing success of efforts aimed at promoting Ladakh beyond its traditional peak season and establishing it as a destination that offers diverse experiences throughout the year.

The Administration attributes this positive trend to a series of strategic interventions undertaken under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. These initiatives have focused on strengthening tourism infrastructure, enhancing visitor facilities, improving connectivity, diversifying tourism products and creating a more visitor-friendly ecosystem while ensuring environmentally sustainable development.

Commenting on the remarkable growth, Lt. Governor Saxena stated that the surge in tourist arrivals reflects the success of sustained efforts to position Ladakh as a premier tourism destination without compromising ecological balance and sustainability.

He observed that tourism remains one of the strongest pillars of Ladakh’s economy and serves as a critical source of livelihood for thousands of residents across the Union Territory. The continued increase in tourist arrivals, he noted, has generated renewed confidence and economic opportunities for a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including hoteliers, guest house owners, homestay operators, tour operators, transporters, trekking guides, artisans, entrepreneurs and local communities whose livelihoods are closely linked to the tourism sector.

The Lt. Governor also acknowledged the contribution of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on promoting domestic tourism, alongside the significant infrastructure development initiatives undertaken in Ladakh. He noted that these efforts have accelerated tourism growth, stimulated local economic activity and contributed to employment generation across the region.

An official statement issued in Leh said that since assuming office, Saxena has consistently accorded high priority to tourism-led development. "Under his leadership, the Administration has introduced several transformative reforms aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business in the tourism sector. These measures include simplifying regulatory procedures, reducing compliance requirements, granting Industry Status to hotels and guest houses, strengthening air and road connectivity, improving tourism infrastructure, expanding visitor amenities, promoting responsible tourism practices and encouraging greater private-sector participation and investment in tourism-related ventures", it said.

The statement added that a key focus of the Administration has also been the diversification of Ladakh’s tourism portfolio beyond the conventional summer season. "Significant efforts have been made to promote winter tourism, adventure tourism, high-altitude trekking, wildlife tourism, rural tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism and astro-tourism, enabling the region to attract visitors throughout the year. The successful hosting of national and international sporting events, cultural festivals and targeted tourism promotion campaigns has further enhanced Ladakh’s visibility in domestic and international markets, while contributing to the extension of the tourism season".

An official said the latest tourism figures reaffirm Ladakh’s emergence as a vibrant, year-round destination that seamlessly combines adventure, culture, nature and sustainability. He added that as tourism continues to grow, the Administration remains committed to ensuring that this expansion translates into inclusive economic development while preserving the fragile ecology and unique cultural heritage that make Ladakh one of the world’s most extraordinary mountain destinations.
