Ever Wondered Where India’s Original Constitution Is Kept? Here’s the Answer

The handwritten manuscript, decorated with artwork and calligraphy, is preserved under advanced protection inside the Parliament Library

The Constitution of India — one of the most important documents in the nation’s history — is not typed but entirely handwritten. While most citizens are familiar with its printed version, the original manuscript, adorned with stunning artwork and elegant calligraphy, is safely preserved inside the Parliament Library in New Delhi under high-security, climate-controlled conditions.

The English version was handwritten by master calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada, who refused payment and only requested that his name appear on every page. The Hindi version was penned with equal skill by Vasant Krishan Vaidya.

Beyond its text, the document is also a piece of artistic heritage. The borders, motifs, and illustrations were created by legendary artist Nandalal Bose and a team from Santiniketan, turning each page into an artistic reflection of India’s culture, civilisation, and freedom struggle.

To ensure its preservation, the manuscript is stored in specially designed helium- or nitrogen-filled glass cases, protecting it from humidity, light exposure, and oxygen. Only authorised officials are permitted access due to its delicate and irreplaceable nature.

Although the public cannot view the original directly, replicas are displayed in Parliament’s Constitution Hall and various museums. High-resolution digital versions also allow citizens to view its details online.

The preservation of the original Constitution inside Parliament stands as a powerful reminder of its importance — not only as a legal framework, but as a cultural treasure and the foundation of India’s democracy.
