Kolkata: Eggs have been added to the PM Poshan mid-day meal menu following demands from students, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Saturday while inaugurating an Iskcon-operated mega kitchen in Alipore.
The semi-automated kitchen, run by the Iskcon Annamrita Foundation, is expected to serve around 1.5 lakh students in nearly 1,800 schools under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation within three months.
Adhikari said the inclusion of eggs was aimed at improving the nutritional value of meals provided to schoolchildren.
The foundation has been operating a kitchen at Bagbazar for the past 12 years. Its capacity has increased from 8,000 to 18,000 meals a day, covering more than 300 schools in north and central Kolkata.
Earlier, Adhikari launched the self-enumeration phase of the Census by submitting his details at the Irrigation Bungalow in Salt Lake. The exercise will continue till August 15.
