ED Grills TMC MLA’s Son in WB Municipal Jobs Scam

Mitra family under ED scanner over alleged illegal appointments at Titagarh Municipality

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Kamarhati Trinamul Congress MLA and former West Bengal minister Madan Mitra's son, Shubharup Mitra, for several hours in the municipal recruitment scam on Wednesday. Shubharup visited the ED office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake in the morning with a file after getting a summons.

He, however, avoided queries from the media. His parents and brother Swarup have also been summoned by the same central agency in the same case but on different dates. The entire family came under the scanner after the ED detected illegal appointment of 125 candidates at Titagarh Municipality in North 24 Parganas.

Most of these recruitments happened in exchange of hefty amounts of cash or jewellery to a high-profile politician, according to sources. A further probe found the TMC MLA’s name, prompting the ED to serve him summons recently to appear before it on July 29 after raiding his addresses in June.

Mr Mitra however joined the rebel TMC MLAs a day after his wife, Archana, and two sons got similar notices for their appearance with the documents of their bank accounts. Mr Mitra, who earlier was arrested by the CBI for his role in Saradha chit fund scam during the TMC rule, said, “I will offer my full cooperation with the ED in its probe. My family members will do the same also.”
