EC Targets Gen Alpha, Gen Z Ahead Of 2029 Lok Sabha Polls

Poll panel plans 50,000 Electoral Literacy Clubs across schools, colleges and universities to boost voter awareness.

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has renewed efforts to reach out to members of Generation Alpha and Generation Z ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, aiming to make them informed voters familiar with the electoral process and capable of leading voter-awareness campaigns.

As part of its revamped initiative, the poll authority will focus on students in Classes 9 to 12 and those studying in colleges and universities across India’s 4,123 Assembly constituencies.
According to EC officials, India has 14.78 crore people in the 18-26 age group, including 7.98 crore males, 6.79 crore females and 9,000 persons belonging to the third gender.
The poll authority plans to establish 50,000 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs), with about 10 clubs in each Assembly constituency, officials said.
It will reach out to students in Classes 9 to 12 across all schools, besides students at 70,000 colleges and 1,400 universities.
ELCs were established in 2018 under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme to introduce students to democratic values, the electoral process and the Election Commission’s role and functioning.
In view of the rapidly evolving communication environment, growing reliance on digital platforms and the need for sustained engagement with young voters and grassroots stakeholders, ELC 2.0 envisages the clubs as a digitally enabled, structured and continuously engaging framework.
